Ambo is a nonprofit social enterprise whose mission is stronger Catholic communities. Stronger churches and faith communities, schools, ministries, and others are fostered through Dailies and Content+Engagement, robust subscription services that make our Communications Helpline available free.

About Tom Shakely

Hi, I’m Tom Shakely. I’m Executive Director at the Terri Schiavo Life & Hope Network. Our primary work is operating a National Crisis Lifeline for patients and families facing euthanasia and related denial-of-basic-care situations.

Tom-Shakely-Ave-Maria.jpgI created Ambo because I believe in (and have experienced firsthand) the incredible role that strong Catholic communities play in the lives of their people—in their relationship with a loving God, in their experience of grace, in their ability to strive for more saintly lives despite the realities of our fallen day-to-day lives, and even in their ability to encounter and relate to their neighbors. We’re living through a time of incredible change and challenge for Catholic communities, not only in demographics but also in terms of the majority of self-identified Catholics who nonetheless have no meaningful sacramental relationship with their Catholic communities.

It’s my hope that Ambo can be a simple, but hopefully impactful, step in a more intentional and perpetual conversation amongst Catholic leaders of all sorts about what’s necessary to foster stronger Catholic communities in the practical, day-to-day task of engagement and communication, as well as through the bigger-picture thinking on what comes next. I’d really be honored if you’d consider joining Ambo as either a Dailier or Content+Engagement subscriber. We’ll learn along the way, and I hope you’ll teach me as much as I can provide value to you and your community.

Where I come from

I’m a member of the board for the Pro-Life Union of Greater Philadelphia, which operates Guiding Star Ministries, a maternity home offering women a way to raise their children while equipping them for a successful life in the highest-abortion zip code in the city. I’m a supporter of the Catholic Foundation of Greater Philadelphia, where I created a fund to honor my grandparents by supporting students. I’m also a past member of Archbishop Charles J. Chaput’s Archdiocesan Pastoral Council.

I’m a Penn State Alumni Association Life Member. As a Catholic and eighth generation Pennsylvanian, I’m a member of the Knights of Columbus and Sons of the American Revolution. I’m also a recreational traveler and runner. I’ve lived in Philadelphia, New York, and State College.
